Hello and welcome to SUNDAYS WITH CELIA VOL 22. Thanks very much for joining me.

It was a fun filled week for me. We spent a couple of days in our old stomping grounds, The OC, staying at the lovely Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa.

Being there reminded us how nice it is to be close to the ocean. It gave us a renewed appreciation for all that the “big city” has to offer, things we don’t have up on our mountain top like a plethora of great restaurants and wonderful places to shop.

This was our room, which overlooked the pool below and the ocean in the distance.

We were actually there to attend a concert of the old seventies band America at a favorite small venue called The Coach House. Remember America? Ventura Highway,   A Horse With No Name,   You Can Do Magic…

Am I showing my age?

Looking Back On Sunday

With Thanksgiving day looming I dedicated this week to all things Thanksgiving. We started off the week with my post on How To Set A Lovely Thanksgiving Table.

Planning For Thanksgiving On Sunday

Are you hosting Thanksgiving dinner? Even if you aren’t you’ve probably been asked to contribute a dish to the meal. For some last minute Thanksgiving inspiration chock full of great looking food and a very pretty tablescape watch this delightful video. It’s a Friendsgiving event brought to us by the nice folks at Williams-Sonoma & Haven’s Kitchen in New York City.

To get all the recipes from the video click here.

Are you making Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving? If so, I hope you’ll try my yummy recipe for Pumpkin Pie in the Sky.

And for some really good advice on how to make a No-Shrink Pie Crust watch Chef Christopher Kimball’s video below.

My Simply Irresistible Cream Biscuits are always on the Thanksgiving table at the Becker residence. The recipe is super easy and foolproof, and I guarantee they will be the best biscuits you’ve ever eaten! I make a double batch because they are also great warmed up the next morning for breakfast.

Even though these biscuits are already delicious all on their own, I think they’d be extra delicious with some homemade butter on top. Sweet Paul, the charming creative guru behind the quarterly Sweet Paul Magazine, has produced a video tutorial on making your own homemade butter in a mason jar. Watch the video but also check out Sweet Paul Magazine, a lifestyle publication for anyone looking to make simple, elegant meals and stylishly easy crafts for the home. I’m a big fan.

It’s time to brine your turkey folks. Brining a turkey is the only way to go. If you’ve not tried it I can’t say enough about how moist and flavorful brined turkeys are. So check out my Turkey Brine Recipe and do it. You’ll be so glad you did.

Need a little help planning your Thanksgiving adult beverages? Check out this article from The Manual. It will take all of the guesswork out of selecting the best cocktails, beer & wine to drink with your turkey. Cheers!

Looking Ahead To Christmas On Sunday

Do you start decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving? Or have you already started? I like to have fall decor around my home for Thanksgiving, but we have a tradition of purchasing our Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend. To help get you in the Christmas spirit I thought I’d share one of the cutest holiday commercials I’ve ever seen. And in fact, it’s difficult to detect that it’s even a commercial, but it is advertising John Lewis, a chain of upscale department stores in the United Kingdom. The music is the best part. It’s a song called, One Day I’ll Fly Away by Vaults.

Speaking of Christmas…

Everyone here in Lake Arrowhead is SO excited that after nearly 2 decades of being shuttered, Santa’s Village, an iconic Lake Arrowhead attraction will open again on December 2nd! After a long renovation, the new village is back and it’s better than ever, having undergone a modern day makeover! Now called SkyPark at Santa’s Village, it is more than just an amusement park and a place to meet Santa. While many of the original rides and attractions have been restored, SkyPark will also soon offer new activities such as mountain biking, zip lining, bungee jumping, ice skating, hiking, fishing, camping and lots more. I hope you’ll come experience the nostalgia of an “Old World Christmas in the Woods” with your family and friends soon. It will be an experience like no other.

  • Today’s post is perfect for those trying to button up last minute Thanksgiving preparations. I’m not hosting this year so a lot of the pressure is off. BUT, I am hosting Christmas and begun planning weeks ago. Of course, I started with the fun stuff first, like planning the table! Our tree will go up just shortly after Thanksgiving. I can’t wait….

  • Planning makes perfect! It seems like time speeds by so fast so getting a jump on things way ahead of time is essential for a flawless event. Plus, it takes so much pressure off and allows the hostess to really enjoy the party too. Good for you for starting early. I bet your Christmas is really going to be bright! Happy, happy holidays!

Hello Celia, new viewer here from NC, love your site and recipes. I am going to be making your Pumpkin Pies as well as your Cream Biscuits, I can’t wait. I had planned on making yeast rolls but not doing that this go round. I was wondering if you have a favorite pie crust recipe as well as an index for your recipes? I tried searching pie crusts but it didn’t bring up a pie crust. Thank you and happy Thanksgiving to you.

  • Hi Shelly, welcome to the blog and thanks so much for letting me know you’re out there! I’m delighted to hear you’ll be using some of my recipes. You’ve made a good choice with the biscuits verses yeast bread for Thanksgiving. It will free up so much of your time on a busy day like Thanksgiving. In fact, I often mix up the dry ingredients a day ahead, then add the cream at the last minute, cut out the biscuits and bake them when my turkey is resting. This way they are brought to the table fresh out of the oven. As for crusts, I’d try the No-Shrink crust from today’s video, that’s what I’m doing this year. I haven’t ever posted a crust recipe because I find them a bit tricky myself and want to perfect a recipe before I post it. As for a recipe index, I will finally be introducing one VERY soon, hopefully next week, so stay tuned! Happy holidays!

  • What a fun weekend. I love the view you enjoyed! I guess there are advantages to having the ocean a stones throw away, but I long for the seasons you enjoy a mere 2 hours away for the seaside cities.
