BATHROOM RENO UPDATE ON THE HOUSE ON COTTAGE GROVE

Welcome to Day 4 of the weeklong series on my latest fixer upper. I had hoped to share this post yesterday but work at the cottage got in the way of my getting it finished. So today I’m sharing the Bathroom reno update on The House On Cottage Grove. The cottage has 3 levels and when work began on my 1920’s Lake Arrowhead fixer we decided to tackle the Main (Middle) Floor first. This floor contains the Living & Dining Rooms, the Kitchen, a Bathroom & the Mud Room. So far this week I’ve shown you the progress made on the following rooms:

The next room I have to show you on the main floor is the bathroom. Below is what it looked like when I purchased the house. Like most of the other rooms, it too was covered in dated wallpaper that was literally falling off the walls. I found the old sink and vintage mirror charming but everything else would have to go.

The toilet with it’s wooden seat needed to go: STAT!

And the shower was absolutely ATROCIOUS!

Just look at the dated, poor quality shower fixtures! Who would want to take a shower in there??

So, the old toilet with the disgusting wooden seat now lives in the trash dump…

along with the shower tile and shower fixtures. We also removed one wall of the shower to replace the old pipes with new plumbing.

The shower opening was enlarged (as much as possible in the small space we had to work with) and the bathroom floor was floated for new tile.

The wallpaper was removed and the walls were paneled with beadboard.

It was a happy day when the new Kohler toilet was installed. It’s called the Kohler Wellworth Classic Round Toilet in White and cost only $148.00. I thought that was a great price for a name brand, attractive toilet.

The floor was tiled in Merola Tile, Gotham Hex Antique White Porcelain Unglazed Mosaic Tile. It runs $7.49 a square foot. I really love the flat, matt finish of this unglazed tile. Get it here.

I am so delighted to show you the newly tiled shower. For the walls I used a Glass Tessera Subway in Sage. The 3″ x 6″ tile is not inexpensive at $14.49 a square foot, but the result was worth the expense.

You’ll notice that the light caused the tile to take on a darker shade when I took a photo of the lower part of the shower. I would say the true color is somewhere between the two. The nice thing is, it’s a perfect sage green that works very well with the green paint I’m using throughout the cottage. You’ll see that I also used the same Antique White Gotham Hex tile on the floor of the shower as I did on the bathroom floor.

I am super happy with the rain head shower fixture I chose. It’s called the Cassidy TempAssure 17T Series Dual Function Thermostatic Shower Trim Package in Champagne Bronze by Delta. I paid $430.89 for it, plus I got an additional 2% back in the form of a rebate from Ebates. Get it at Build.com here.

As I mentioned, I loved the old, original sink and have kept it. I decided to use the same diamond shaped onyx tile I used in the kitchen for the sink countertop. Plus, the original sink was open below, showing all the ugly plumbing. So, we built new cabinet doors below the sink to hide the plumbing.

To finish off the bathroom cabinets I purchased these beautiful faceted glass cabinet knobs at Anthropology here.

And I purchased a new bathroom sink faucet that matches the shower fixtures. It’s called Cassidy Centerset Bathroom Faucet with Pop-Up Drain Assembly by Delta. You can find it here in the same Champagne Bronze finish for $197.82, plus get an additional 2% rebate from Ebates. The Cross Handles are sold separately here for $74.27.

All that remains to do in the bathroom is to paint it and that will be done tomorrow. So please stay tuned for photos of the finished bathroom real soon. In the meantime if you’d like to see a couple of my other bathroom renovations click below:
