DUKE BASKETBALL – LIVE FROM CAMERON STADIUM!
My son, Taylor, is a devil, a BLUE DEVIL that is!
So come basketball season we all get a little wild and crazy around here. We don Duke T shirts, or in Taylor’s case, he dons blue paint……
Megaphones are used to proclaim our excitement. We want to make sure that the entire mountain knows we are Blue Devil fans!
Even our chalkboard gets in on the action.
And we turn on ESPN to see if we might spy Taylor in the crowd wearing more blue paint.
I prepare the sliders and Brad pours the drinks. And this is pretty much what basketball season looks like in the Becker residence.
That is until it’s time for our annual trip to Duke University for Parents’ and Family Weekend. That’s when we get to visit our son……
and go see the Blue Devils play LIVE in Cameron Stadium!!!
If you have never been to a college basketball game in person, you haven’t seen anything yet!
Call me a “Cameron Crazy” , but I say going to a Duke Basketball game is one of the most thrilling activities known to man! The trumpets sound……
and the horns blow……
and the drums pound……
as the athletes enter the arena.
But the excitement really builds when Coach Mike Krzyzewski, affectionately known as “Coach K”, arrives.
He is the winningest coach in college basketball…..
…..and his team has a few National Championships under their belt!
Parents’ weekend happens during pre-season when exhibition games are taking place. Despite the fact that Duke faced Bowie State????, this year’s matchup was still an action-packed event!
The student section, accommodating 1,200 students, is standing room only. Chants, and rants and synchronized sways keep the crowd energized and the players encouraged.
On the other hand, I’d hate to be the opposition. Free throws are anything but free when you’ve got cavorting and hollering Duke fans to contend with.
However, Duke players are congratulated after every basket with a rousing “woosh” , chanted simultaneously by thousands of adoring fans.
The excitement and anticipation builds as anxious fans watch with bated breath……
as the score grows ever greater.
Whistles blow……
and coaches crow……
but mascots never waiver.
Huddles are formed……
and stars are born.
as basketball is played at its finest.
Cheerleaders kick up their heels……
and coaches cool their heels……
as the team hands down another victory.
It was handshakes for all……
and happiness prevailed……
for bench warmers as well as headliners.
It was a good day in Cameron Stadium. Taylor returned to his dorm room……
and we returned to our hotel room……
and all was right with the world.
Goodnight…
