MY LOG CABIN DINING AREA RENOVATION
Hello! In my continuing series on the renovation of my Fawnskin, California vacation rental cabin I bring you my log cabin dining area renovation. Let me start by showing you what the area looked like when I bought the cabin. This was, of course, before we refinished the hardwood floors and painted the walls white. The cabin actually had a nice antique table with 4 chairs, but the table didn’t fit the space or our needs. Because, as you may know if you follow me, I like to entertain, and that means for this home I needed the biggest table that would fit in the space. So this table, with its plastic tablecloth had to go.
I decided that the chairs, on the other hand, had potential.
All they needed were new cushions.
I’ve never actually reupholstered anything by myself before. But I decided to wing it with some fabric from an outlet store, new filling materials and a staple gun.
Had I paid a professional to do this job I probably would have found the work very unacceptable, but, since I did it myself, I’m giving me, and my pocketbook a pass.
I love banquette/bench seating yet I’ve never actually had it in any of my homes. I decided a built-in bench would work perfectly into the space and by adding hinges to the top of the bench, would provide much needed storage space as well. So I had my carpenter build me these great built in benches.
At this point both my dog and my guests would need me to place cushions on these benches to make them comfortable.
So my next project involved making my first set of cushions as well.
I sew but I’ve never made cushions, however I figured, how hard could it be?
So, after sewing a few decorative throw pillows to match the cafe curtains that I had made…
this is what I ended up with.
Now all I needed was a large dining table. Luckily I have an amazing carpenter that can do absolutely everything. I showed him this photo of a dining table I saw online at Terrain and asked him to make me one just like it.
And he did! I can now comfortably seat 10 people (and my dog) at my log cabin dining table.
Just kidding, my dog IS NOT allowed at the dining table. I PROMISE!!
But lots of friends are welcome.
And we’ve already hosted several dinner parties in our log cabin dining room.
But in addition to a dining area, my cabin would not be an adequate entertaining space without a bar area. So I repurposed a credenza I found at a favorite store called My Favorite Things in Crestline, California. I used inexpensive IKEA frames to frame some H & M Home dish towels for the wall. Yes, dish towels can make great, inexpensive art!
I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to refresh an old serving tray that I would use on the bar credenza.
And added some cool barware…
and voila, I had a bar perfect for entertaining.
- IKEA Champagne Glasses, Carafes, Wine Rack & Black Serving Trays
- Costco Wine Glasses
- World Market Shot Glasses
- Target Threshold Ice Bucket, Gold Finish
So, let’s take one more look back at the BEFORE…
and the AFTER.
So there you have it: MY LOG CABIN DINING AREA RENOVATION
