MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PLACE TO HAVE LUNCH

Greetings. If you live in Southern California or are planning a visit, I want to share with you my absolute favorite place to have lunch. It’s called Julienne and it’s located on a lovely, quiet street in beautiful San Marino. Named and modeled after the owner’s favorite restaurant in Paris, it refers to the culinary term, “julienne”.

Open for breakfast and lunch only, it’s the kind of “ladies-who-lunch” restaurant that only an old-money area like San Marino can deliver successfully. And it’s been doing it successfully for over 30 years now. That kind of history speaks volumes in the restaurant industry, and is a testament to the loyalty and enthusiasm of Julienne’s customers who just keep coming back. But in truth, while you’ll see plenty of girlfriends, and mothers & daughters enjoying this place, it’s not just for ladies. It’s a favorite of my dear ole dad and husband as well.

That’s because Julienne delivers great food in a super charming, european-esque setting that makes one want to linger as long as possible in their intimate, gilt and wood paneled dining rooms. Or, if you prefer to dine alfresco, their seen-and-be-seen front patio is the place to be. This was our table on a recent visit.

Because Julienne’s does not take reservations (except for large parties) you will likely have to wait to be seated at this always-busy establishment. But I assure you the wait will be worth it.

Everywhere you look is a sight to behold, with gorgeous flower arrangements and lovely artwork and decor ornamenting each of several dining areas.

The food is delicious, artfully plated, and the wine list is good too. Julienne’s menu features soups, salads, sandwiches and hot entrees prepared from recipes that have been perfected over their decades in business. Below are photos of what my dining companions and I enjoyed on a recent visit.

I ordered Spinach Cannelloni, the special of the day, and received a portion so large I enjoyed it for lunch the following day as well.

They offer lovely desserts too, if you saved room.

Once you finally tear yourself away from the table you’ll find yourself lingering in their equally adorable gourmet market and gift shop. Or, pass the time waiting for your table ogling over their lovely wares.

Many of the delicacies they serve in the restaurant (and more) are on display in the market and are available for takeout. It’s perfect for those too busy to cook, those looking for fantastic picnic fixing, or you’ll find pastries and desserts of every description to tempt your palate. If I lived closer I’d make this my go-to market for sure!

In addition to both fresh, bottled or frozen delights, the market also has a wonderful selection of kitchen and tableware, books and gifts.

Julienne’s is my absolute favorite place to have lunch, and it’s a darn good place to have a great breakfast as well! They are open Monday through Saturday and are closed on Sunday. If you’re from out of town, Julienne’s is the perfect place to have breakfast or lunch while visiting the beautiful and nearby Huntington Library. Or, pop in if you’re staying at the Langham Huntington Hotel, the wonderful place where we spent Easter Sunday. I also shared this magnificent hotel with you in my blog post entitled, How To Host a Very Impressive Cocktail Party.

But if you can’t visit Julienne’s you could prepare some of the famous recipes available in their cookbook, “Celebrating With Julienne“. Here’s what’s being said about the book:

This award-winning cookbook is flat-out gorgeous. And the food is amazing, too. Author Susan Campoy spent thirty years as one of Los Angeles’ most in-demand caterers, and her Julienne bistro in San Marino hasn’t had an empty seat in two decades. Completed just before Campoy died of breast cancer in 2009, Celebrating with Julienne showcases the most beloved recipes from her career: Crème Brûlée French Toast, Carrot Ginger Soup, Beef Daube, Lemon Coconut Bars, and so much more, including holiday, party, and picnic menus. All royalties go to City of Hope.

Since last week was Cancer Survivor Week, I think I’ll pick up a copy of this lovely book in support of such a good cause. Click here if you’d like a copy too.

So there you have it: MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PLACE TO HAVE LUNCH

This was not a sponsored post and the folks at Julienne’s don’t know me from Adam. I just like sharing the places I enjoy with you.
