A COLLEGE CARE PACKAGE

Hi there. The other day my son called me from his dorm room at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He tugged at my heartstrings when he asked me to send him some of my homemade Nuts & Bolts. It’s a sort of Chex Mix affair that I dreamed up, and was a favorite snack enjoyed by my kids. You can get my recipe by clicking here.

It seems that my son’s buddy at school receives a college care package regularly from his mom who resides in New York. She includes Chex Mix and it reminded my son that I had not sent him a care package in a while. On the one hand it’s nice to be missed, on the other hand I realized I’d been negligent lately in sending my son a little piece of my heart and some goodies from home.

I decided to include some homemade Granola as well.

And since it was Valentine’s Day I included a jar of his favorite candies and some boxes of Nutella & Go, another favorite of his. I jam as much as I can in a flat rate Priority Mail box.

A little love note topped it all off.

It makes me feel good to send my son the occasional care package, and I know it makes him feel loved and remembered. When I was in college at the University of Hawaii I was always envious of friends that got packages from home. I often felt lonely living so far from home and wished that my mom would think to do such a thing. But alas she never did. Parents of our generation are different, don’t you think?  While we may be accused of hovering a bit too much, I think it beats being uninvolved by a long shot.

Do you send your kids a college care package from time to time? If so, what do you include? And by the way, if you have a child away at college and you’re not inclined to pack your own box of goodies, there are now companies that specialize in this. I’m quite sure companies such as this didn’t exist when I was in college. Here’s an example of one sold on Amazon.
