10 REASONS IT’S BETTER TO BE A SOCCER MOM THAN A SKI RACER MOM
Hi There!
It’s winter up in these hills. My son, Austin, just left town with his Rim of the World High School Ski Team for a race in Mammoth. And the Winter Olympics are a few short weeks away. So, I’ve got winter sports on my mind and that set me to thinkin’ that, as a mountain mama, I’ve never actually been a soccer mom. But I sure am a ski racer mom.
When you raise your kids at an elevation of 5,000 feet, the soccer fields get mighty icy in winter. The ski slopes, on the other hand, are nicely groomed and ready for action.
Many kids on this hill are born with silver skis in their cribs, not a soccer ball in sight. Why silver skis? Because skiing can cost ya a pretty penny, and could even cost ya your last dime! You see, mountain kids start skiing (or snowboarding) almost as soon as they can walk, or at the very least, when they enter Kindergarten. That’s because the school system here promotes after school ski lessons. Our “Friday Night Lights” are on the ski slopes, where our school children go for lessons every Friday night. They then go on to the Rim of the World High School Ski Team where they compete in ski racing competitions with other schools throughout the state.
I got to thinkin’ that those soccer moms down the hill might just have a thing or two over on us mountain moms, and decided to take a closer look at the subject.
So, here are my top 10 reasons why it may just be better to be a soccer mom than a skier mom.
REASON #10 – Soccer moms don’t have to buy skis & poles, helmets & ski suits, goggles, gloves & boots. They just have to buy balls.
REASON # 9 – Soccer moms don’t have to buy lift tickets for their kids. They can buy their own lifts.
REASON # 8 – Soccer moms don’t have to buy expensive ski wax. They can buy a bikini wax.
REASON # 7 – Soccer moms do lunch. Skier moms do race duty.
REASON # 6 – Soccer moms watch time-outs. Skier moms watch wipe-outs.
REASON # 5 – Soccer moms drive thru gates to get to their kid’s games. Skier moms have to set gates, racecourse gates that is.
REASON # 4 – Soccer moms’ kids stopped wearing bibs a long time ago. Skier moms have kids that never give up their bibs! Race bibs that is.
REASON # 3 – Soccer moms drive an average of 4.5 miles to their rival’s soccer field. Skier moms, on the other hand, drive an average of 450 miles to their not-so-local rival ski resort.
REASON # 2 – Soccer moms get to drive in the comfort of their minivans to their kid’s matches. Skier moms haul their kids around in 4-wheel-drive monster trucks with snow tires and ski racks.
REASON # 1 – Soccer moms watch *hospital balls, skier moms get hospital calls.
* A “Hospital Ball” in soccer is a weak kick.
Are you a skier mom too? Let’s commiserate!
