WHY I LIVE IN LAKE ARROWHEAD
Hello and thanks so much for stopping in! Lately I have been giving a lot of thought as to why I live in Lake Arrowhead. It actually has a lot to do with the 4 seasons.
As a native Californian who grew up in the flatlands, I truly had no appreciation for the 4 seasons until I moved 5,000 feet up a big hill to Lake Arrowhead. Even though my home is situated in sunny southern California, here in Lake Arrowhead we have 4 distinct seasons. Down the hill it truly is difficult to distinguish one season from the next. It gets a little chilly in the winter, maybe down to 50 degrees. It gets a little warmer in the summer months. But, for the most part, the Southern California climate is clear and sunny year round. But not here in Lake Arrowhead! Where I live I distinguish the seasons by my Redbud Tree. I love my Redbud tree! In spring, it gives me pretty white flowers……
even though it’s named a “Red”bud tree.
And in summer, my Redbud tree has big fat green leaves……
that in the fall turn a lovely yellow and then golden color and fall off.
Then, in winter it is usually covered with snow. But, no, not this winter.
This winter, while the rest of the country battles record snowfall and freezing temperatures, we out west have been experiencing what is termed an Indian Summer. In fact, here in California, this winter has been the hottest and driest on record. While drought is not good for anyone, there are those that are really enjoying this summer-like winter. Me, on the other hand, I miss winter! I miss the frozen tundra and I miss watching the storm clouds come rolling in.
But this winter we have only had ONE snowfall, and it was a wimpy one at that! It kinda caught us off guard, as the previous day had been nice enough to ride bikes.
I’m sure folks in Minnesota think I’m crazy right about now, but I miss waking up in the morning to find snow in my front yard……
which by afternoon has completely blanketed everything.
I miss snow blowing in on the terrace and making lovely patterns on my garden furniture.
And I don’t think the Blue Jays mind that the birdbath is frozen over or if their favorite place to perch on the string lights is a bit icy.
I like the sight of my garden gate covered in snow……
and the towering pines in the backyard blanketed in white.
It is exciting to see how big the icicles will grow off of the eaves.
And I don’t mind that my terraced vegetable garden takes a winter nap. It gives me something to look forward to in the spring.
And, as you can see, my kids don’t mind shoveling snow – honest they don’t! Do you see their happy faces? They know there will be no school tomorrow!
And they also know the snow plow will eventually come and clear the roads so I can deliver them to the ski slopes where they can really have some fun!
And I get a kick out of our birch and cyprus trees all tied up for winter. I think they look like they belong in Whoville with The Grinch that Stole Christmas.
Because, quite frankly, somebody stole my winter this year and I feel like a Grinch!
So, winter, if you can hear me, come out, come out, wherever you are. I miss you!!!
