THE HAMILTON TURNER INN
Greetings from Savannah, Georgia. After an exhaustive search of the hotels in Savannah during the planning process for our Southern Road Trip, I finally decided on The Hamilton Turner Inn. Located in the heart of historic downtown Savannah, it is very centrally located to all of the sites. I have to be honest, not many hotels in Savannah appealed to me, but this one stood out. It had a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor, who ranked them #1 in 2013 out of 107 hotels in Savannah. I was also intrigued by the fact that in John Berendt’s best selling book, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, he described the raucous parties thrown there.
The exterior of the old mansion was stunning, surely one of the most lovely buildings in Savannah. The inn is named for Samuel Pugh Hamilton, who built this mansion for his family in 1873. Then, Dr. Francis Turner purchased the house from the Hamilton estate in 1915 and kept it in the family until 1965.
It is located on Lafayette Square, laid out in 1837 and named for Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de La Fayette. He was a French hero in the American Revolution and the square was named after him in honor of his visit to Savannah in 1825.
The water in the fountain is dyed green every year during Savannah’s massive St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
So let me take you inside the historic Hamilton-Turner Inn.
As you enter, there is a lovely drawing room to the left where they host a reception every afternoon with complimentary wine and a nice selection of hors d’oeuvres.
Later in the evening Port is served as an after dinner aperitif.
There is a large dining room on the right side of the foyer where breakfast is served.
Our room, #310, was located on the second floor of the inn…
and was named after Noble Jones, one of Georgia’s original colonists. There are 17 rooms and we were told that this room was an upgrade from the one we had originally booked.
Stepping inside the beautiful, massive door, (which we were told was original to the building) …
we found a comfortable 4-poster bed…
adjacent to a fireplace.
A large bank of tall, non-operational windows, brought light into the room. We looked out onto one of the cast iron balconies with planter boxes that decorate the front of the inn.
Our large bathroom had 2 pedestal sinks…
and a jetted tub/shower combination.
I guess the photos speak for themselves, that this Bed & Breakfast Boutique Hotel is lovely in many ways.
However, at the risk of sounding jaded and critical, I found it somewhat dated. Although it was in good repair and well maintained, the decor made it a bit like stepping back into the 1980’s.
What do you think? Would you stay here, or can you recommend another hotel for my next visit to Savannah?
PS – I’ve got Georgia on my mind, Savannah, Georgia that is. So, stay tuned, and in my next post I’ll show you all around beautiful and historic Savannah.
So there you have it: The Hamilton Turner Inn
