OUR DAYS ON THE LAKE ARE COMING TO A CLOSE
Greetings,
As the last days of summer rapidly approach our days on the lake are coming to a close. I feel myself desperately trying to hang on to the last vestiges of summer. Where did the time go?
It is hard to believe that this coming weekend is the Labor Day Holiday, which for us marks the end of our season on Lake Arrowhead. Memorial Day to Labor Day, that is the window of time that mother nature gives us to enjoy our lovely lake.
When Memorial Day approaches there is a palpable excitement in the community. Our winding mountain road becomes congested with folks pulling boats on trailers, everyone anxious to launch them in time to enjoy the first long weekend of the new summer season.
But by the same token there is a marked change in the air as Labor Day approaches. The wind begins to whistle through the trees and there is the slightest chill in the air. These are the unmistakable signs that fall is approaching. This time of year everyone, it seems, is trying to make the most of their final days on the lake, and we are no exception.
Knowing that Sunday would be one of our last days to enjoy our dock, I packed a picnic of chicken salad sandwiches…
fruit salad…
and some freshly baked lemon cookies and we headed off to the lake.
Because soon this wooded pathway would be covered in fallen leaves, and eventually in snow.
And before long the sun will hang lower in the sky, and the shadows will grow deeper.
The next time I walk this path to our dock I’ll likely be wearing a heavy sweater, bundled up against the approaching winter.
I’m going to miss seeing my son enjoying the dock with his friends.
and I’m going to miss my friends coming to call, side-tying their boats alongside ours.
Soon it will be too cold to swim in the lake…
or cruise past the pretty lakefront homes.
So Brad and I, along with our dog Charlie, spent Sunday on the lake.
Because it won’t be long before the resident geese fly south for the winter…
and the Yacht Club where our son worked for the summer will shut its doors, bidding farewell to another summer season on Lake Arrowhead.
The resort will stow its lounge chairs, cabanas and umbrellas and the beach will soon be empty.
The Water Ski School, a fixture on Lake Arrowhead for decades, will close…
and students will have to wait for next year to brush up on their water skiing skills.
Ladies in vintage woodies will have taken their final spin around the 14 miles of shoreline…
and the Arrowhead Queen will be the only boat still plying the waters, entertaining tourists with fascinating facts about our well loved lake.
It will be far too cold for kayaks, canoes…
or kids to be on our lake.
It will not be long before people scurry to remove their boats from the lake before winter sets in. Soon the docks will be empty…
and instead we will enjoy them from afar…
looking forward to our next summer on the lake.
But it’s not quite over yet. I am hosting one final Labor Day dinner on the dock Friday night and look forward to sharing it with you.
