CRUISE LIKE A NORWEGIAN
Greetings!
We have a tradition in our family.
Every time one of our children graduates from high school or college we take them on a trip of their choice. As a result we have rented homes on a island in Maine…
taken Mediterranean cruises that involved flying in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class…
and we took a river cruise on the Seine from Paris to Normandy.
We always let our children choose the trip with the only rule being they must take us along. It’s our last hurrah, our final fling, our long goodbye.
So, if you’ve been following along you may know that our son Austin recently graduated from high school.
That means it’s now his turn to take us on a graduation trip and he chose to cruise like a Norwegian.
To be exact, we will soon be embarking on Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, The Breakaway, for a 7 day cruise from New York City to the island of Bermuda.
We splurged on a really nice Haven Aft-Facing Penthouse Suite #10312. The Haven suites are the Breakaway’s most luxurious, well-appointed accommodations that come complete with 24-hour butler and concierge service.
Our suite also comes with this very large balcony where I plan to spend a good deal of time.
Occupants of “The Haven Suites” get keycard entry-only access to a private two-deck suite complex called The Haven. The courtyard area in the Haven has a pool, two whirlpools, a private sundeck, two private massage rooms and a sauna. Guests also have a private entrance to the ship’s spa and fitness center. And there is a restaurant for Haven guests only, as well as a cocktail bar and concierge desk. Because the Breakaway is one of those mega ships, having access to this private oasis will hopefully make sailing on the Breakaway more like sailing on a smaller ship, my preferred way to cruise.
While Brad and I are enjoying The Haven I imagine our son Austin will be spending a lot of time at the onboard water park or rock climbing wall.
I’m calling our cruise the “cruise to nowhere”. Not because Bermuda is nowhere but because this cruise spends 4 days at sea when I will be doing absolutely nothing. Except well, relaxing, getting caught up on my book club reading list, getting a spa treatment or 2, and likely eating way too much!!!
While in Bermuda I don’t plan to do a whole lot either. I’m hoping I can find a deserted pink sand beach like this one…
where I can take a leisurely walk with Brad.
If I get real ambitious I might swim with the turtles…
or perhaps go kayaking…
or maybe even go spelunking in Bermuda’s cave.
And I’d love to go in search of this lovely little Bermuda oasis while I’m there.
One things for sure, I’ll be cruising like a Norwegian!

Have you sailed on The Breakaway or visited Bermuda? If so I’d welcome your suggestions for things to do and see. And since we are starting and ending our trip in NYC I’d love to have your suggestions for things to do in The Big Apple, including the names of your favorite restaurants.
So there you have it: CRUISE LIKE A NORWEGIAN
