A POSTCARD FROM BRUGGE BELGIUM
Greetings. Today I’m sending you a postcard from Brugge Belgium. It is far and away one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. In my travels to 47 countries and countless cities across the globe, Brugge stands out as one of my all time favorite places.
You simply cannot imagine how beautiful Brugge is until you experience it. I’ll try to express some of it’s charm through these photos, but there is nothing like being there for the full effect. I know this because in planning the trip I poured over books and videos of Brugge, but nothing could prepare me for what I felt and saw actually being there.
We arrived just in time to experience the beauty of the colorful fall leaves.
In going through the hundreds of photos I took of Brugge, I don’t even know where to begin selecting the ones to share with you. Everywhere one looks in Brugge is picture-postcard-perfect.
So why don’t we start as Brad and I did, with a boat ride down Brugge’s iconic canals.
Known as the “Venice of the North”, the historic old section of the city was built on a series of breathtakingly picturesque small canals. There are many places throughout the city where one can buy an inexpensive ticket for a 30 minute narrated boat tour.
We waited about 15 minutes on this flower-filled landing for one of the dozens of tour boats that ply the canals year round.
A short stroll from our vacation rental home, we boarded our boat just across the canal from the iconic weeping willow tree that can be seen in so many postcards from Brugge. This time of year it was weeping with amber leaves ready to fall into the waters below.
The boats pass single file under the narrow and often quite low lying bridges.
Watch your head and keep your hands and feet inside the boat;)
While Brugge is made for walking, it is recommended that one does not miss a canal tour by boat because so many special treats can be seen only from the water. An example of that was this sculpture, placed there for the viewing pleasure of passing boats.
Or this sculpture lying along the water’s edge.
Even the drain spouts had been dressed up as dragons for our viewing-by-vessel pleasure.
How would you like to live in this palace, complete with this divine looking gothic style boat garage?
Or how about this cheerful, flag-flying boat landing in your backyard?
I can just imagine how delightful it would be to drink my morning coffee in this cosy window box overhanging the canal…
or in this waterfront abode?
Can you imagine dining alfresco in this waterfront garden…
or taking tea in this tower?
The residents of Brugge sure are fortunate to call this place home.
And Brugge is not just home to humans. It also shares its waterways with these wonderful swans.
This fellow came right up to the boat to say hello.
So, just as the rain begins to fall, I’ll end our boat tour of Brugge here.
And because there is oodles more to show you of this fairytale place, I will be back real soon to take you on a walking tour of town.
Stay tuned for shops full of Belgian tapestries & linen, restaurants that serve delicious Belgian fries, candy stores overflowing with Belgian chocolate, and of course we will taste Belgian waffles too!
So there you have it: A POSTCARD FROM BRUGGE BELGIUM
