SUMMER AT STONE HILL COTTAGE
Remember being a child when summers seemed endless and carefree? I vividly recall the euphoric feeling when that final school bell rang, signaling that school was out for summer. It was the signal that meant my days would be spent across the street with my best friend Donna, who had the neighborhood swimming pool where we would while away the afternoons perfecting our diving techniques and playing marco polo. Donna’s mom always had a delicious homemade white coconut cake with fluffy white icing sitting under a glass domed cake stand on the kitchen counter. I knew that eventually we would make our way inside for a big slice of that deliciousness.
My other BFF Lorie had a house in Palm Springs. Homes in her desert neighborhood were situated in a big circle with a lawn interior and a communal swimming pool for a centerpiece. Despite temperatures that hovered around 105º in summer, Lorie and I would spend every waking moment perfecting our tans in between dips in the swimming pool. Every afternoon the adults in the neighborhood would convene poolside for the daily ritual of a potluck happy hour which included virgin frozen concoctions for the kids. Made with limeade and whatever else we felt like throwing in, coconut syrup, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, anything to approximate the more adult versions being consumed nearby by those over 21.
Then there was my friend Marsha, whose parents had a charming old lakefront cabin here in Lake Arrowhead. Beautiful memories of winters spent sledding and endless snowball fights are etched in my mind for eternity.
But it was the summers on the lake, where the air smelled of pine needles and every evening included roasted marshmallows by the fire that I loved most about summer.
I can still remember how the splash of icy fresh lake water felt on my youthful skin after Marsha and I had sunned ourselves in the ever present battle to see who could achieve the deepest tan. It is these memories that inspired me to make my home here in this mountain paradise of southern California. I’ve been able to recapture that carefree style of living that only a lifestyle free from the hustle and bustle of the big city affords.
You too can recapture those carefree sensations of childhood by spending a few days of your summer at Stone Hill Cottage, the beautiful old log cabin I own in nearby Big Bear Lake.
My charming vacation rental is where you can have an authentic, carefree vacation without roughing it, and prove that it is still possible to have the summer of your youth that will likely be even better than you remember it.
