SUNDAYS WITH CELIA VOL 8
Good day and welcome to Sundays with Celia Vol 8. This is where I get the chance to share with you a little of this, and a little of that, just various & sundry things I’d like to share. So without further ado…
My Week In Review on Sunday
It’s been a busy week! I attended a Garden Birthday Party for a special girlfriend. Made and brought along these pretty darn amazing Spaghetti Squash Fritters with a Spicy Yogurt Dipping Sauce and they were gobbled up in no time. Get the delicious recipe from PureWow here.

I recently went to an estate sale at the home of the late Putty Henck, a Lake Arrowhead icon.
He was a fixture in the San Bernardino Mountains since the 1920’s, and was known as the man who built and later ran Santa’s Village amusement park. Mary Putnam Henck, Putty’s mother, opened Lake Arrowhead’s first schoolhouse, with 13 students. Today, Lake Arrowhead intermediate school, where 2 of my sons went to school, carries her name.
I came away from the estate sale with one of Putty Henck’s chairs which I purchased for a whopping $15.00. It will go in my son Austin’s 1st apartment.
I am delighted to give Austin something of historic value that will remind him of home. But before this well-worn chair finds its new home in Austin’s bedroom it needs to be reupholstered. So this week I set about doing just that. I purchased the gray houndstooth pillows and washed linen duvet cover for Austin’s bed at Target. Using the felt patches lumbar pillow as my inspiration, I then purchased the mustard colored fabric you see in the photo below which is what I’m using to reupholster Putty Henck’s chair.
I started by removing all of the old and worn existing upholstery, taking photos and documenting how it was originally done. Using the photos and notes as my guide, I’ve begun the process of replacing the old with the new and I’m having a lot of fun doing it. Stay tuned for an update on my efforts at learning to be an upholsterer.
On another note…
Friday night I had a dinner party on the terrace in honor of a friend visiting from New Zealand.
Spent the day preparing a summer feast that started off with this summery Heirloom Tomato Tart.
I also prepared what I call my Kitchen Sink Orzo Pasta Salad where I prepare orzo pasta and add whatever fresh vegetables I have on hand, then dress it in extra virgin olive oil & red wine vinegar.
The orzo salad pairs well with my Maple Glazed Salmon recipe with a Creamy Herb Sauce. I was inspired to make salmon after having it on my recent cruise to Alaska.
And for a little green goodness I prepared this killer recipe for Chopped Kale Salad with Dates, Almonds and Parmesan Cheese.
But the pièce de résistance was dessert, White Peach Crisp that I prepared and served in individual mason jars.

Celia’s Suggestion on Sunday
The Single-Stem Vase
So, I thought that I’d start to include a tidbit of advice, just a little tip or suggestion for something nice each week on Sundays With Celia. This week I’d like to suggest to you a simple yet sweet way to bring fresh flowers into your life with the Single-Stem Vase. I got the idea while visiting the Clever Cow Creamery in Eastsound on Orcas Island. They make delicious homemade ice cream and sell it in the cutest shop you’ve ever seen.
Notice how they placed a tiny vase with a single white daisy in each window? So very simple but so very sweet!
So, for my dinner party Friday night I decided to use shot glasses as vases, and placed a single white flower with a touch of greenery in front of each place setting. Since I was serving the dinner family-style and needed to leave the center of the table open for platters of food, these Single-Stem Vases replaced the need for a centerpiece.
Celia’s Sunday Sentiment
When I was a teenager I fell in love with poetry. I kept a simple spiral notebook into which I copied all of my favorite poems and little words of wisdom. I recently ran across this binder filled with the words that filled my teenage heart.
I thought it might be nice to share some of these words with you each week. So here’s one I thought fitting with regard to the Single-Stem Vase…
From “A Slice of Snow” by Joan Walsh Anglund…
So there you have it: SUNDAYS WITH CELIA VOL 8
