Little Ways to Brighten Someone’s Day

This time of year can be so stressful and, if you’re like me, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of everything you need to accomplish during the holidays. From decorating your home, to planning for and cooking special meals, to shopping for Christmas and hostess gifts, to entertaining guests, this time of year is taxing for most of us. For this reason, I think it’s the perfect time of year to remember folks with a thoughtful expression that says you’re thinking about them and that you care.  So, today, I thought I’d share with you some of the little ways to brighten someone’s day during this crazy time of year.

Itty Bitty Gifts

When we think about gift giving, especially around this time of year, we can get overwhelmed at the amount of time and money we’ll likely spend. The truth is, an itty-bitty gift can mean the world to someone, as it simply tells them that you’re thinking of them. From flowers from your garden, to a sweet smelling candle, to some silly socks for Christmas morning, little things can show them that you care in a small but meaningful way.

Another sweet and petite way to gift is with a bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes, a great resource I’ve recently discovered and wanted to share.  I think these petite and festive holiday bundt cakes would make the perfect small gift, perhaps for your colleagues at work? Or bring one of their larger bundt cakes to share at the office party.

Remember, gifts really don’t have to be over-the-top or expensive. In fact, when a gift is too big, it can actually make the recipient feel uncomfortable, and they might also feel obliged to have to return the favor in a big way too. That defeats the point. A small gift is just the offering you need to put a bit of sunshine into someone’s day.

Go Old School With Your Communication

In this day and age of constant texting and “Facebooking”, we’ve forgotten how much it can mean to actually speak to someone! So go ahead, pick up the phone and let people close to you hear your voice. It feels really good and it doesn’t cost a thing to let people know we are thinking of them.

Oh yes, and do you remember those things called letters? In a time not so long ago that’s how many long distance friends kept in touch. Of course, we don’t need to write letters to keep in touch anymore but that’s what makes receiving a letter in today’s busy, tech-heavy world so special. Imagine how good it feels to find a gem amongst the inevitable pile of bills in the mailbox.  Ahhh, the power of snail mail! It really can put a smile on someone’s face.

Surprise!

A pleasant surprise can really brighten someone’s day. Leave a box of candy on a co-worker’s desk. Bake up a gift from your kitchen, or simply drop your friend’s favorite coffee off before work. Send flowers! Better yet, show up on the doorstep of a friend who isn’t expecting you just to say hi.

Make Music

Okay, you don’t have to actually make music but, hey, if you can, more power to you! If that’s the case, serenade someone today. If you don’t have the gift of song, invite someone to a concert with last minute tickets from StubHub. Imagine how fun and uplifting a Christmas concert would be. Or, simply send someone a link to a sentimental song that means something to you, or is a song that you know will brighten their day. There is something so therapeutic about music.

Pay it Forward (Literally)

We’ve all heard those stories about someone paying for someone’s coffee at Starbuck’s, then people keep paying it forward on down the line. You don’t realize what a powerful effect this has on your day until it happens to you. You’ll think about it later and smile. Promise! So go ahead, make someone’s day. You have no idea the positive impact a three-dollar coffee can make.
