KITCHEN RENO UPDATE ON THE HOUSE ON COTTAGE GROVE
Greetings from Lake Arrowhead. I’m back after a fantastic 14 day trip to Europe. While I was away a lot of progress was made on my latest fixer-upper. And since I’ve been back I’ve been working like crazy on it myself. I come home every night exhausted, so much so that sadly I’ve had little time to give to this blog. So, at long last, here I am, and today I thought I’d give you a kitchen reno update on The House On Cottage Grove. Plus, if all goes as planned, I will be giving you a reno update on a different area of the cottage everyday this week. So please be sure to stop into the blog each day this week so you don’t miss it!
Progress on the Kitchen
I am so pleased to say that we are nearly finished with the kitchen! But first let’s take a look back and see where we came from. Below is what the kitchen looked like when I purchased the property. I know many of you have seen this before but it’s a nice reminder, and allows you to compare the old and the new.

Another view of the “Before” from a different angle. See the same area as it looks now in the photos below.
Shelf brackets have been installed and painting begins. The paint is called “YOGI” Behr Premium Plus Ultra from Home Depot.
My Cast Iron Shelf Brackets measure 10″ x 7 3/8″ and have a rusted iron finish. They cost $9.99 each and can be ordered here. If the rusted iron finish is not what you’re looking for they are also available in 3 other finishes.
The kitchen is not entirely ready for a full closeup yet, but…
here’s a peek of the “After”! Stay tuned, as I’ll be sharing a larger view of the finished kitchen real soon.
I got the wooden cutting boards shown below at one of my favorite places to shop for my homes, H & M Home. Their prices are so reasonable and their designs are on target. Get the small board here and the larger one here, on sale now for only $9.99.
But in the meantime here’s a little bit more of the “before”. In the photo below you can see what the kitchen ceiling used to look like.
We removed the old paneling to reveal a beautiful wooden ceiling. The wood was raw so we stained it in a rich mahogany color by Minwax. We added the beams to match the adjoining dining room & living room ceilings and stained them in ebony. I found this beautiful antique light fixture at my favorite Lake Arrowhead shop, Bella’s.
Below are 2 photos of the sink area in the original kitchen.

Installation of Beadboard Paneling
In the photo above the cabinets have been installed and the sink, dishwasher and refrigerator are in place. Next came the countertops. I found this beautiful diamond cut onyx that matched my paint color, picked up some of the brown shades in the plumbing fixtures I chose for the space, and complimented the copper accessories I planned to use. While it is a stretch from the conventional, I loved it and decided to go out on a limb and use it.
The result I believe to be beautiful and perfect for the overall design. What do you think? If you’d like some of your own onyx tile it comes in 12″ x 12″ sheets and is sold in lots of 5 sheets for $110. Get it here.
The final step was to seal my beautiful new onyx countertops. My favorite protective sealer is from Stonetech and it’s called BulletProof. Many professional tile setters swear by it and I do too, having used it for years in my own home and in all my fixer-uppers.
Finally we installed the Bridge Faucet.
My beautiful Bridge Faucet is from Signature Hardware. It’s called the Ponticello Bridge Kitchen Faucet with Side Spray and Cross Handles. I chose the Antique Copper finish. The cost is $319.95. Get it here.
My sink also comes from Signature Hardware. It’s a 30″Damali Italian Fireclay Farmhouse Sink in White. The cost is $595.95. Find it here.
For my cabinet knobs and drawer pulls I chose these beautiful vintage copper styles from Build.com. Get the Vintage Copper 2-1/2 Inch Center to Center Cup Cabinet Pulls here at a cost of $26.78 each. Get the Vintage Copper Classic & Modern 1-1/4 Inch Diameter Mushroom Cabinet Knobs here at a cost of $9.93 each. Both styles also come in 8 other finishes. Get 5% off this hardware until June 30, 2017 with coupon code: SUMMERSALE.
Shopping once again at Bella’s, I discovered this pendant light that curiously, had been encased in a wooden frame.
We removed the frame, added a chain and hung it above the kitchen sink. I think it compliments the other kitchen light fixture beautifully. Now we just have to paint the windows.
So that’s it for now folks. I’d love to hear what you think.
Please stay tuned and tomorrow I will be sharing the renovation progress on the Living Room, followed by the Dining Room and Main Floor Bathroom as well. I hope you join me everyday this week for a full week of The House On Cottage Grove. And by the way, this house will be on the market soon.
