THE HOUSE ON COTTAGE GROVE TWIN BEDROOM

Hello friends. I hope you are enjoying a relaxing Labor Day. I’m very sorry for the radio silence of late. Life and The House On Cottage Grove have simply gotten in the way of my blogging. I, and my small construction crew, have been working so hard to complete the renovation of this very special home, and I’m delighted to report that we have now reached the finish line. The House On Cottage Grove will go on the market this week! It has been an 8 month labor of love, and it is with pride, relief and a bit of nostalgia and happy tears that I now end my latest journey of renovation. Now it’s time to get her sold to her next caretaker. But before she leaves me I wanted to spend the next week or so showing you the various rooms in the house you haven’t seen yet. So today I will share with you The House On Cottage Grove twin bedroom.

This is what the bedroom looked like when I bought it. The thin plywood walls were covered in dated wallpaper and the bedspreads, carpet and accessories were a hodge-podge of ugly, mismatched stuff.

There was a cute, wooden built-in bed on the left side of the room. And a built-in set of drawers was oddly placed unevenly under the window

A full-sized bed was placed on the right side of the room.

So we went to work stripping the wallpaper…

and we removed the built-in drawers in order to place them evenly under the window.

And then I had my carpenter build a matching wooden bed for the right side of the room. Makes so much more sense, doesn’t it?

Next I began to work on the design for the room using this expensive but worth the splurge, alpaca wool blanket that I purchased here as my color inspiration. I designed this home with a young family in mind, so the 3 upstairs bedrooms are a haven for kids. And I wanted this twin bedroom to be gender neutral, so the browns, off white and gray tones fit the bill.

Then I found this darling wallpaper that reminded me of the real forest full of birds that was just outside the window. It also complimented the wool blankets perfectly. The wallpaper is by Schumacher and is called A Twitter Winter. While it was expensive and was a BIG splurge for a flipper house, I purchased it at a discount here.

Next we added beadboard to the areas that would not be wallpapered and painted the walls in Natural Almond by Behr Premium Plus Ultra in Satin.

The BEFORE bedroom had a closet without a door.

So we added doors, a beautiful light fixture from Restoration Hardware, put beadboard on the ceiling and hung the wallpaper.

The hardwood floors were also refinished, new trim was placed around the windows, and new brass window hardware was added.

I added plugs with USB ports in the headboard of each bed. What kid isn’t going to want to charge some electrical device in his room after all?

And see that darling little heart-shaped chair in the photo below? Making my husband come to a screeching halt, I grabbed that once decrepit and dirty chair from somebody’s trash pile on the side of the road as we were driving by one day. After some sanding and a bit of paint it is better than new!  Hate to admit it but I’m getting like Nicole Curtis of HGTV’s Rehab Addict. She can never pass up a good trash heap. For as the saying goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s potpourri.”

And the curvy lines of the chair match the bedframe like they were made for eachother.

Finally came the fun part, adding the bedding and decor. I purchased the gray pinstripe duvet sets at IKEA. The gray Quail Faux Fur Euro Sham comes from Pottery Barn (no longer available) and the cable sweater-knit lumbar pillow is from Target. The gray, New Zealand natural sheepskin rug is from World Market.

The cute little wooden lamp was in the room when I purchased the home. We gave it a fresh coat of chalk paint and added an Edison bulb and now it’s just perfect.

The inspirational alpaca wool blankets now grace the foot of each bed.

We produced curtain rods out of galvanized pipe & fittings, and I sewed curtains using gray herringbone fabric leftover from the couch I reupholstered for my son’s Boulder, Colorado home.

The clip-on curtain rings were purchased here.

A gray colored ceramic eagle and some books left behind by the previous owners now have the perfect home in The House On Cottage Grove twin bedroom.

For the benefit of potential buyers, I placed BEFORE PHOTOS in little log card holders in every room in the house. The cute and inexpensive place-card holders can be found here.

One last feature I wanted to share was the special black iron door hardware I used on the door of this bedroom. It is actually gate hardware I purchased here from Signature Hardware. I also left in place the #4, some kind of remnant from the past which makes me wonder if the door didn’t come from someplace else originally.
