THE HOUSE ON COTTAGE GROVE MASTER BEDROOM
Hello. In my ongoing series featuring my now complete fixer-upper, today I bring you The House On Cottage Grove Master Bedroom. The Master Bedroom is located on the lower level of the house, and is accessed via a hallway just off the Bonus Room.
This is what that hallway looked like when we purchased the home. Area rugs over a raw cement subfloor, very ugly modern wall sconces, and mismatched art on the walls.
So we got started by resurfacing the plaster walls, removing the cheap and unattractive orange peel texture it had previously.
We also added beautiful new, expensive, solid-core doors to the bedroom, adjacent utility room & the Master Bath. The old ones were hollow and cheap.
So, this is what the hallway looks like today.
We continued the herringbone pattern of the wood-look ceramic tiles down the hallway from the Bonus Room. We added a carpet runner and painted the walls in Natural Almond by Behr Premium Plus Ultra Paint in Satin. We replaced the wall sconce lighting with these beautiful golden sconces from Joss & Main.
But before I show you the Master Bedroom in it’s current, remodeled state, let me show you what it looked like when I purchased the home. The room was known as The Cowboy Room. While it was actually one of the more attractive rooms in the home, I didn’t think a cowboy theme was appropriate for our mountain location.
And as you can see in the photo below, the Master Bedroom floors were simply the cement subfloors that had been painted red. That would have been freezing on a cold winter’s night!
In selling me the house, the previous owners kept the few things I actually liked in the home, including the vintage bed in this room. So, I decided to make my own headboard, drawing the design on craft paper. My talented carpenter then made the headboard for me.
As you can see in the before photo below, the bedroom had drywall on the ceiling when I purchased the house.
We decided to rip it out, revealing the original beamed ceiling. The problem is, the beams were unfortunately very unattractive.
So I decided to veneer them.
We also insulated a previously uninsullated wall…
and then added new drywall along with window, door and baseboard trim, and we stained the new beams to match the beams in the rest of the house.
In the meantime I went to work sewing a duvet cover and pillow shams for the bed using the beautiful fabric I acquired at Dorell Fabric Outlet in Fountain Valley, California.
I also had an old chair from the original home reupholstered. Below is the lovely chair I acquired.
The Before
And here it is after being reupholstered.
The After
I carpeted the room in a neutral tan color, and painted the walls in “YOGI” Behr Premium Plus Ultra from Home Depot. The previous owners had left behind a couple of small tables. I painted them, along with the headboard, to use as nightstands. The paint used is Natural Almond by Behr Premium Plus Ultra Paint in Satin. Then I added two small pendant lights over each nightstand which I purchased here. And track lights were added to the beamed ceiling

A new mattress was purchased and I used the bedding I sewed to dress the bed.
And voila, here is The House On Cottage Grove Master Bedroom, all ready for it’s next owner to enjoy.
One nice feature about this bedroom is that it has a private entrance and could potentially be rented on AirBnB. Just inside that pretty yellow door is the Master Bedroom and ensuite Master Bathroom.
Stay tuned, as in my next post I’ll be sharing the beautiful new Master Bathroom which I am especially proud of. Here’s a sneak peek…
If you know someone looking for a charming Lake Arrowhead home, this house is now on the market. See the listing here.
