HOW WE SPENT FIVE FABULOUS DAYS IN PALMETTO BLUFF
Well howdy! Thanks for joining me here in lowcountry South Carolina. I am very excited to share with you how we spent five fabulous days in Palmetto Bluff. In fact I’m so excited that I’ll warn you right now, this is a long post. I just have so much I want to share from our wonderful trip to this really great spot. So I hope you enjoy…
Palmetto Bluff is located less than an hour outside of Savannah, Georgia where my husband went to college. So, it’s close to his old stompin’ grounds and is an area dear to his heart. It’s also a place our eldest son Nathan loves to visit with our grandchildren, and in fact, he makes it a point to go to Palmetto Bluff annually.
We recently spent five days in this lovely community, where we escaped from the frigid cold temperatures of Lake Arrowhead with our son and 2 grandchildren, who were very happy for a respite from cold DC. I told you about the awesome vacation rental we stayed in in this post.
What We Cooked
One of the good things about staying in a vacation rental home is we had the ability to prepare our own meals. Both my son and I love to to cook and enjoy doing it together. So, I’ll start by showing you some of the yummy meals we prepared during our five fabulous days in Palmetto Bluff. This was my son’s 9th vacation in PB, and he has a tradition of preparing a Surf & Turf meal on the first night of each of his stays. So this trip was no exception. We started our meal with an appetizer of shrimp cocktail that was arranged over a bed of ice.
My son likes to have Maine lobster flown in and he then cooks it on the grill.
We also prepared new potatoes with parsley…
and a delicious fresh herb salad with thinly shaved fennel.
Some petite filets were grilled along with fresh corn on the cob.
It was a spectacular way to start our first evening on the bluff.
Another night we went Italian, cooking up a Caprese Salad and Pasta with Garlic Cheese Bread.
Breakfast in Palmetto Bluff
We also cooked breakfast most mornings. One morning my son prepared a Mexican egg scramble served with hash browns
Another morning we made hash in an attempt to use up the potatoes from our Surf & Turf dinner. We served our homemade hash with eggs, bacon & fruit salad. Blueberry pancakes were made on yet another morning. As you can see we ate well.
Sneaking Out For S’Mores
One of the most special treats about a stay in Palmetto Bluff is the nightly S’mores ritual. Every night at River House the best S’mores Bar you ever have seen is set up for guests and residents.
It’s part of the resort fee you pay as a guest of the hotel or when renting a home in PB. So we took full advantage of this amazing evening treat.
This darling S’mores cart is hooked up to a bicycle and holds about 8 different kinds of DELICIOUS homemade marshmallows. I loved the strawberry…
and the toasted coconut marshmallows. But there were also chocolate and vanilla, and birthday cake with sprinkles, and flavors I can’t recall, but they were all super yummy.
You then grab a long stick and toast your mallows around 1 of 3 giant fire pits that are tended all evening by a special hotel employee.
What an absolutely unique and special treat this was for all of us, but most especially for our grandchildren.
Transportation Around Palmetto Bluff
The best and the most fun way to get around Palmetto Bluff is by golf cart.
Most residents own them and they may be rented by visitors. We rented a golf cart for the duration of our stay, and it was so much fun tooling around in it.
On our first day we took a long golf cart journey to explore the various villages around Palmetto Bluff. As we drove along I took this video as my son discussed our plans for the next day with my granddaughter. It’s so cute. Have a listen…
I wanted to get ideas for the home we will be building in River Dunes, North Carolina. River Dunes was designed by the same architects that designed Palmetto Bluff, and it’s also a water oriented community like PB. There is a neighborhood in PB that is reserved exclusively for family compounds. I love this idea for our home in River Dunes so we went to explore it. There is one of the most delightful properties located there. Have a look. The home shown below is the main house built over a lake with a boat house below. Isn’t it spectacular?
Adjoining it are 4 small cabins for family and friends. Simply idyllic!
The little town in Palmetto Bluff is called Wilson Village and it houses a charming Post Office…
complete with rocking chairs out front.
There are 2 lovely chapels in PB that are booked year-round for weddings. And by the way, I did not photoshop that blue sky!
There are also pretty townhouses that have shops on the street level. Some of the townhouses are available for rent through the resort and they are lovely inside.
RT’s Market is a handy place to pick up provisions and gifts in PB. A short drive outside the gates of Palmetto Bluff you’ll find major grocery stores where we did our food shopping. But RT’s was great for a quick coffee or daily ice cream for the kiddos.
Palmetto Bluff By Boat
Boat rentals are also available at Wilson Harbor where we rented an electric Duffy. They also provide fishing poles and fishing gear for catching the abundant sea bass that were biting aggressively on the day of our outing.
It was a bit chilly and wet the day we decided to pack a picnic and go fishing in the tranquil waters of the May River, but it actually made it extra fun and cozy.
I skippered the boat as the boys and children went fishing.
While we caught a lot of fish we released all of them to live another day in beautiful Palmetto Bluff.
For me the most fun was getting to see the lovely lowcountry homes from the perspective of the water. Here are a few of my favorites.
We also saw the lovely Montage Resort Hotel from the water.
These are the hotel’s individual cottages where Brad and I stayed a few years ago. I blogged about these utterly charming cottages in this post.
Getting Around By Bicycle
As you can see, renting a bike of any size is not a problem in PB. It’s also another great way to get around during your visit.
They even rent bikes with training wheels.
And all the bikes come complete with a handy basket attached.
Dining Out In Palmetto Bluff
Just because I like to cook does not mean I don’t enjoy going out! Believe me, I think I appreciate eating out more than most people because I do spend so much time cooking. There are several places to dine in Palmetto Bluff. For casual all day dining you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at Buffalo’s in Wilson Village. We especially like their Sunday Brunch with a biscuit bar.
We ate lunch one day at the restaurant in the Montage Resort Hotel where they had this lovely arrangement of antique trophy cups in the hotel lobby.
The restaurant was pretty…
and I loved this really lovely diorama ship that decorated the wall next to our table.
We had a delicious dinner one evening in Moreland Village at Cole’s, where we ate fried chicken and biscuits family style.
Other Fun Things To Do In Palmetto Bluff
There is a never-ending supply of ways to spend your time in PB. Of course it’s a great place to relax, as the weather is almost always sunny and there are plenty of porches & hammocks for this activity.
The Porch of our Rental Home
There are also many parks complete with tree houses that are a child’s dream. My grandchildren would spend all day in the tree houses if we’d let them. They loved the zipline at the tree house too.
There are several pools where guests can enjoy swimming and hot tub soaking. There’s an adults-only pool as well, and a Spa with all the expected amenities and treatments available. There is also a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and riding stables, neither of which we took advantage of during our stay.
And, one of the coolest bowling alleys on the planet is located in Moreland Village. It’s a super elegant 4-lane bowling alley where we had a really fun evening bowling after our chicken dinner at Cole’s.
Well folks I could go on forever about how we spent five fabulous days in Palmetto Bluff but I’ll end it here. Our family looks forward to our next visit to Palmetto Bluff, where we will never tire of visiting.
