WHAT SERVICES ARE NEEDED TO KEEP A HOME SAFE?
Your home is the place where you should feel the most comfortable. It should be a happy, healthy and safe environment. But to achieve this you need to be diligent about maintaining your home so that it provides you with these advantages.
In doing so, there may be some tasks that you might not think about doing that actually could be affecting the health and safety of the environment in which you live. So today I thought we’d talk about a few of these things that can help to keep you and your family healthy in your home. Being mindful of these tasks will also help you to maintain your property before you end up having to pay a more sizable repair bill. Here are 3 services you may wish to consider for your homes wellbeing.
KEEP YOUR HOME CLEAN
If you’re like me and my husband you’ve probably debated about the merits of hiring a housekeeper. In doing so you might have come up with a laundry list of reasons why you shouldn’t: it’s a luxury you can’t afford, or it’s a sign of laziness. But have you ever thought about why you should hire a house cleaner?
Outsourcing your house cleaning actually has so many benefits, even for those on a tight budget.
- It’s a way to help manage your time more efficiently. If you work full time, then using your time off to clean your home will deplete your energy and reduce your time to enjoy anything else you’d rather be doing. It might even allow you to work more efficiently at things that earn you the money to pay for a cleaner.
- My husband and I are now empty nesters so the house stays much cleaner than when we had 5 kids around. So, our cleaner comes every-other-week. The regularity of getting my house cleaned from top to bottom on a regular basis keeps my home feeling fresh and well maintained. And all I have to do is light cleaning in between. I actually believe that having a clean home is great not only for my physical heath, but for my mental health as well.
- When I didn’t have a house cleaner I was unable to clean my entire 5,200 square foot house in the same day. That meant some parts of my house were less clean than other parts at any given time. Once I hired a team to clean my home, every nook and cranny gets cleaned the same day, making my home feel completely fresh all at once.
CONTROL PESTS
Your home should be a clean and safe haven for your family to enjoy. Having pests invade it can derail that safety and cleanliness very quickly. Where we live here at 5,000 feet in the mountains I fight a constant battle with wildlife, pests and rodents. So, I’ve learned that there are many reasons why you should click here to contact a pest control expert to service your home at least once every quarter.
- Your Family’s Health – It’s no secret that pests are dirty and spread diseases. In fact, common household pests like ticks, cockroaches, bedbugs, rats, mice, or mosquitoes can transmit a variety of disease through their droppings or saliva. Ridding your home of these pests creates a much healthier living environment for your family.
- Safety – Rodents like mice, rats, or bats can transmit rabies to humans and pets. A wasp nest on our property attached my homebuilder when we were under construction, sending him to the hospital. That’s when I hired a monthly pest control service that has given me peace of mind.
- Damage to Your Home – We had giant rats invade the buildup area below our home when it was under construction. We learned very quickly after moving in that rodents like to chew things they’re not supposed to. They had chewed electrical wires, made holes in our insulation, and left nasty droppings.
- Allergen Aggravation – Over 50 million people in America have allergies and that statistic includes me. Pests and their droppings or dander can cause allergy and asthma symptoms to get worse.
- Carpenter ants and termites – In my home renovation business I find dry rot and termite damage on a regular basis due to deferred home maintenance or poor installation in the first place. In fact, at this very moment we are making repairs to window frames, siding and a deck that has been damaged by dry rot.
6. An infestation of wood-destroying insects can literally lead to an unstable foundation, which could cost thousands of dollars to repair. So preventing an infestation can save you money and protect your home’s resale value too.
MAINTAIN YOUR HVAC SYSTEMS
Most homes here in southern California have air conditioning. But here on our California mountaintop the summer heat is less pronounced, so not everyone has AC. Maintaining a good heating system is paramount however, because we get cold, snowy winters. We finally added AC to our home a couple of years ago and I learned a lot about HVAC services at that time. And in-fact, I’m putting a new system into my current renovation project, where the system had clearly been neglected for years. Now my clients, the new home owners, are paying the price.
- Get your HVAC unit inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year, even if you don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. This should ideally be done in the spring before the summer heat kicks in, or in fall before the winter cold. In doing so your unit will work at peak efficiency and can cool or heat your home when you need it the most.
- Your HVAC unit will accumulate dirt and dust in areas that will affect how well it runs. Have your filters cleaned or changed regularly, get the vents & ducts cleaned out as well, and have the condensing coils inspected. If these areas aren’t maintained your unit will lose some of its operating efficiency, and your home won’t be cooled or heated as well as it could be.
- Cover your AC condenser unit in winter and make sure it has been installed on a safe masonry footing above the ground soil. This way it won’t be exposed to rain and/or snow during months when it’s not in use, protecting it from rusting or decaying.
I hope these tips will help you to create a safer, cleaner and happier living environment for you and your family.
