THE COTTAGE ON CATALINA KITCHEN REVEAL PART 2
Hi there! As promised in my last post, today I’m super excited to bring you The Cottage on Catalina Kitchen Reveal Part 2! In Part One I showed the kitchen “BEFORE” photos and walked you through the demolition and renovation process. Today I’ll not only be reminding you of the original kitchen…
The Before
but I’ll be sharing the “AFTER” photos. Plus, I’ll be sharing links to all my valuable resources. In designing this home my wonderful clients, who have 3 young children, wanted a design that was not too precious and would withstand the wear and tear of kids and short-term renters. But at the same time they wanted a clean, sophisticated and slightly modern aesthetic with a touch of rustic mountain. The kitschy, mountain bear theme is all too prevalent in these parts, and is my design style antithesis. But we did do a good job addressing the “mountain” aesthetic in the Kid’s Room that I showed you in this previous post. And you’ll notice a tiny ode to mountain in the kitchen cabinet hardware that my client found and I love.

So, in the Part One Post I left off by showing you the wall where we installed my signature, open shelving. The shelves were made using reclaimed pine wood that we salvaged from another area of the home. The same pine was used to trim the Range Hood. In keeping with our plan to use black as our accent color, we chose inexpensive black metal shelf brackets from Home Depot. We added the fun and fashionable Modway View Contemporary Modern Steel Wall Sconces in Black on either side of our Proline Hurricane Range Hood.
The Countertops
Next came the countertops. We decided on practical and durable Sequel Quartz in Organic White from Bedrosian Tile & Stone. So clean and beautiful!
On the other side of the kitchen, where we enlarged the window for a better view of the forested backyard, we repositioned the sink, centering it on the window. After installing the quartz countertop we added the over-mount, single-bowl, IKEA Havsen Apron Front Sink in white. It measures 25″ x 19″ and at $167.00 it’s a great, affordable sink option.
The Appliances
New finger-print resistant stainless steel dishwasher and range were selected.
We chose a 30″ Gas Range with a Self-Cleaning Oven by Frigidaire. I really like this model because it has a built-in look but is actually a slide-in, and has a continuous 5-burner grate. But the best part is that the controls are in the front instead of on a back panel, making this range look very high-end, almost professional looking, but at a very affordable $1,300.
For the dishwasher my client chose a KitchenAid 24-in Built-In Dishwasher from Lowes. It is also well priced at $854 and is highly rated. Watch for Lowes frequent appliance sales for an even better price.
The Big Reveal!
Ta-da! So, as you can see, the pièce de résistance in this kitchen is the gorgeous SMEG Refrigerator/Freezer. This two-door unit with freezer on the bottom comes in 8 different fabulous colors that each make a bold, retro statement. My client chose the cream color, which I feel is clean, calm and sophisticated, and makes it pop off of the white wall. We ended up having to rearrange our kitchen plan to accommodate this fridge because it actually requires an extra 6 inches of clearance on the hinge-side of the door opening. So, if you notice, SMEG fridges are usually placed at the end of an open kitchen, not between cabinets, because they can’t be builtin. This is an important consideration if you wish to add a SMEG fridge to your kitchen plan.
As you might imagine, accessorizing is my favorite exercise in designing any room. It’s why I particularly enjoy adding open shelves to my kitchen designs because they provide the perfect place to display pretty things. In the case of this kitchen, my client allowed me to simply acquire whatever I felt the kitchen needed for both the pretty and the practical side of outfitting the new kitchen. Such fun!

A Lovely Way To Wash Dishes
Now, have a look at the beautiful exterior-facing wall with our lovely new window and expanded view. This area is completely private so we decided not to install a window treatment here, as it would have obstructed the view.
The Glacier Bay Newbury Faucet in Oil-Rubbed Bronze was an affordable $199.00 from Home Depot. The quality was good and it had what I feel is compulsory, a pull-down sprayer.
I accessorized this area with twin Faux Olive Topiary Trees that I placed in Basket-weave-style Ceramic Pots topped off with Preserved Sheet Moss. I just love using sheet moss around all my potted plants. It really gives them a finished look and camouflages the interior of pots. Next to the sink I added a Cake Stand onto which I displayed dish soap, disinfectant spray and hand moisturizer. This trio of items came from JSH Home Essentials.
Over on the far right we used a gorgeous Charcuterie Tray by Etú Home that I purchased at Pottery Barn. It made a beautiful backdrop for the SMEG Drip Coffee Maker that matches our SMEG Refrigerator.
SMEG products are made in Italy and are distributed at Pottery Barn where we were able to take advantage of a Pottery Barn sale to get them at a discount.
Here’s another view of the sink area. The bell on the wall was a sentimental gift to my client from her husband. The black easel belonged to my client as well. We placed a cookbook on it after these photos were taken.
And here are links to the items shown…
Cake Stand from Crate & Barrel $54.95 | Marble Paper Towel Holder $24.95 from CB2 | $54.00| Twig Branch Cabinet Knobs from Amazon| Basket Weave Pot similar one from Anthropology
