Greetings and thanks for stopping in today. If you caught my last blog post about my antioxidant dinner party than you know I promised to give you my

Matcha Green Tea Sugar Scrub Recipe

I prepared this DIY body scrub to give to my dinner guests as a party favor.

I wanted to give them something that matched the theme of my Healthy Cooking Group’s dinner, and since I was using antioxidant rich Matcha Tea in all of my recipes, what better gift than a Matcha Green Tea Sugar Scrub?

I love body scrubs and exfoliation creams that help us shed superficial layers of dead skin and reveal a more radiant, soft surface layer of new skin. For this reason whenever I get a manicure or pedicure I get the “deluxe” version which includes an exfoliation treatment. It’s my favorite part of the mani/pedi! We have such very dry air up here on our mountaintop and I suffer from very dry skin as a result. Exfoliation helps me to combat my dry, flaky skin. So, I did a little research about how to make homemade body scrubs with ingredients right from the kitchen. I found that they were simple to make and MUCH CHEAPER than store bought body scrubs. So, here is my Matcha Green Tea Sugar Body Scrub recipe so that you too can make it at home.

Here is what you will need:

  • 4 1/2 Cups Granulated White Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Matcha Green Tea Powder
  • 6 Green Tea Tea Bags
  • 4 Cups Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Coconut Extract

Since taking the photo above I have discovered a brand of Coconut Oil I prefer,  NOW Real Food Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. You can get it at your local health foods store or on Amazon here. It is cold pressed and unrefined, which I believe is what is responsible for its VERY coconutty scent & flavor. Although you won’t be eating this body scrub, it certainly smells so good you’ll want to!

I also found my organic Matcha Green Tea Powder here on Amazon. It had the highest rating at the best price.

So, here is how to prepare my MATCHA GREEN TEA SUGAR SCRUB RECIPE.

Start by adding the sugar, Matcha Green Tea Powder and the green tea leaves from the tea bags to a large mixing bowl. Simply cut the tea bags open and pour the leaves into the bowl. Whisk or stir the dry ingredients until they are thoroughly combined.

Soften the coconut oil in the microwave for about 15 seconds until it is soft enough to pour into the bowl of dry ingredients. Add the coconut extract, then mix until it is thoroughly incorporated.

Finally, you will transfer the Matcha Green Tea Sugar Body Scrub into air-tight containers.

I used these 8 ounce Quilted Ball Jars that I purchased on Amazon here.

This large recipe will produce seven, 8 ounce jars of scrub. Or, simply put it into a large, 60 ounce jar and you’ll have body scrub to last you a good long time.

Since I was giving this body scrub to my girlfriends as party favors I decided to include a little bamboo spoon that I tied onto the jars with green raffia.

You can find these cute little 3 1/2 inch spoons here.

I placed my jars of body scrub inside paper berry baskets that I purchased awhile back at Michael’s who no longer carry them. I found a good alternate source for similar berry baskets here.

Then simply line the basket with a small square of fabric and voila, you have yourself a terrific party favor.

Tips For Use:

  • Apply a handful of the Matcha Green Tea Sugar Scrub to your arms and legs and gently massage. The exfoliation properties in this scrub feel wonderful, almost as though someone else is giving you a message.
  • I don’t use this on my face. I think it is better suited for the body only.
  • While I have dry skin and benefit from the oil in this body scrub, I prefer to use it before I soap up. I use my normal body wash applied with a body scrub sponge to remove the scrub and excess coconut oil.
  • If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of coconut oil, here is a good article on the subject.
  • If you’d like to learn more about the healthful benefits of green tea, read this article from the National Institute of Health.

Now for a couple of precautions to consider:

  • Use caution with glass jars in the shower. I chose glass jars because they looked pretty as party favors. An air-tight plastic container might be a safer alternative.
  • The coconut oil in this body scrub can make the floor of your shower or tub slippery so please use caution.
